Eh? Speak up, sonny!

Bad news guys.

I woke up on Monday, and couldn't hear a thing out of my right ear. There was no pain, and there was no blood. There just also wasn't any sound.

So I did what any self respecting 20-something would do.

I asked facebook.

(turns out, it is weird)

And then I googled it.

And then I ran to the store, and picked up some wax-dissolving ear drops.

I wasn't really worried.

But it's been 2 days now, and I still can't hear out of that ear.

So I'm doing the responsible thing...

...and asking you.

(My next step? Twitter. Of course.)

I could go to the doctor, but in my experience, they usually say super frustrating things like "oh, you can't breath because your throat is swollen closed? Gargle salt. And then pay me $80."

And so I'm asking you. Have you ever gone deaf before? And do you have any ideas on how to get my hearing back?

Or should I just brush up on my ASL skills?

PS. For those of you trying not to dry heave, I swear I clean my ears regularly.

-No really, I do!

Beyond the ear wax drops, I've got nothing. I really think its time to call the doctor. :/

You should soak a q-tip in hydrogen peroxide and then use it to clean your ear. You probably just pushed wax beyond where a q-tip can reach and so the peroxide will get there and break it down. You might have to do it more than once over the course of a day or so. If you can hear it bubbling, that's a good (albeit distrubing)sound!

We sometimes clean with peroxide - we just pour it in our ears. I heard Dr Oz talk about it once. If it bubbles up, it means there is something to clean (possible infection if LOTS of bubbles). If it doesn't, you are clean. He said it's completely safe - not sure how much his opinion means to you. lol As a mom, though, I'd make you go to the dr!!!!!

Get an ear candle. You can buy them at GNC. Don't use it alone though. That can be kind of tricky. It pulls the ear wax out of your ear. You may need a couple to get all of the crap out. But they work. http://www.gnc.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=ear%20candle&origkw=ear%20candle&sr=1

Honestly I would consider the dr. My dad had to go in regularly to have them take a HUGE ball of wax out of his ear! And he cleaned his ears out regularly as well. Its just an overproduction of wax.

Sooo, did you know that cleaning your ears too much can cause that problem??? Bryan is terrified of q-tips for that reason. Apparently you aren't supposed to use them because over time it just ends up pushing most of the wax deeper into your ear. (even though I SWEAR most of it is on the q-tip). I would try one of those remedies that bubble in your ears and try to break up the wax...or just go to the dr. like Bryan did a couple years ago and they clean it for you. It is surprising how much can get stuck...

Don't blame you on the "No Doc" thing. I woke up randomly on Sunday with a swollen knee and the inability to walk (only limp, pathetically) so I went to the doc on Monday. I paid $25 to see the doc, they confirm that the knee is in fact swollen, and give me meds I already had by another name (naproxen=ibuprofern)for another $25. Yay!

But really, in your case I would probably see the doc as you've already tried some remedies and advice.

Can you tell if your hearing is just blocked and funky, or can you seriously not hear any vibration at all in your ear?

If it's the first, I second the hydrogen peroxide. Lie your head flat on one side and have someone pour a little capful or so in there. Let it sit a minute or so, then stand up and tilt your head so it can drain out. (I had way too many ear infections growing up.) Are your glands swollen beneath your ear? If they are then it may be an infection. There's ways to help "milk" that infection out, so if thats the case, shoot me an email and I'll tell you how that works.

If it is the second, go to the doctor. If you literally can't sense any vibrations or muffled funky sounds, that's seems like a brain and/or receptor thing and is likely more serious.

End of novel. I hope that its just a bad infection! Feel better.

Um. I have zero advice. I just wanted you to know I heard you.

I've never gone deaf before, but I did get a really bad ear infection once (they super suck as an adult) and it made it harder to hear. Of course, I also felt like someone was stabbing a knife in my ear and there was a constant high pitched noise, so that's probably not what you have. I'd guess it's just a build up of wax that the doctor can get rid of for you.

It's most likely an ear infection. Try taking decongestants. The fluid build up in your ear will drain.

this happened to me before and it was because the rubber backing on my earring fell into my ear, and i didnt know it, and then it just slowly lodged itself deeper and deeper into my ear. but i bought swim ear drops and but them in and actually they pulled the backing out!! i thought i was the only one these things happened to!!

Im too scared to read the comments. So im just going to answer - here in SA when my ears block like this i go to our local nurse and she uses a syringe to blast the ear to clean out the was blockage - usually a lot of hard was n the ear canal. You cannot do this yourself and while i clean my ears every day and use ear wax softening stuff it doesnt keep my ears clear. It doesnt hurt and right afterwards i can hear as clear as a wistle! Good luck

Growing up, my mom would clean our ears out with peroxide. Just have your hubby pour enough in your ear, sit for a minute or two and then empty it out with a paper towel. It will be a little uncomfortable after that for a few minutes, but if there is anything in your ear, it will come out with this method (unless it is a bug and then not so sure that it would come out :P) Okay so now that I have grossed you out, I say if that doesn't work, you really should go to the doctor. Good luck!

Maybe you just have over-achieving ears that like to produce wax?

Sometimes the doctor has to clean my ears out for me. It is super fun. Not.
