Making your little sisters doubt their parents love? Priceless.

People have been asking me this question a lot lately.

(and by "people" I mean Tara and Lori)

How do you pronounce Helena?

So I thought to myself, "Heck, why not write a post about it?"

(yeah, I'm kind of running short on ideas this week.)

(...and I'm copying some of this straight from my FAQ page. Because I'm lazy like that.)

Here is the official answer:

Hell-ay-nuh.

There is actually an accent over the second "e" to make it say "A".

No, I'm not making that up! It's on my birth certificate. My mom was really feeling her french heritage that year.

Here, I'll put it in: Heléna. That's my real name.

Which? Awesome way to make your kids hate each other. My sisters were jealous of my accent, and I probably didn't help when I told them that it was because "mom and dad just love me more.'

Yup. I was such a nice kid. Right Amber? Chantel?

Guys?

You can't still be mad.

....Crap.

I'm linking this to my sister's party, Small Treasures Tuesday. Because having me for an older sister is a treasure.

Seeing it written, I'd probably say "Helen-ah" since that's the spelling of the city in Montana, which we were taught was "Helen-ah".

Now in the .00001% chance we ever meet, I'll have to remember that. :-P

Hahaha! That's awesome. I wondered how you pronounced it...thought it was Helen-uh. But the little accent thingy is very telling. Hey. How do you add that little thing anyway?

I thought that was pronounced. I know a couple of women with you name. They aren't as awesome though.

My little sister was the only blonde in the family. So my brother and I always told her she was adopted.

She's still mad.

I looked exactly like my aunt as a child so my brother use to tell me she was my real mom. This was his story:

Aunt Sherri is your real mom. She was a prostitute and had you and was too embarrassed to admit it so Mom and Dad took you.

Yup, much worse than the mailmans daughter.

Gotta love siblings... I have 5 of them. I should know. ;) LOL.

What I want to know-- is how do your crazy relatives feel about it? The inmates? Huh?? :)

Bwhaahaha
That's great!
Though...my older sis, Anna, gets teased by Caleb about her "digger" thumbs. He says she's adopted. Smart aleck.
Sheesh. :P lol

That joke doesn't have as big of an effect in my family...My sister is adopted. Haha.

It doesn't help that my mother is a brunette and my dad and sister are both redheads. And me? I'm a blonde. I don't understand at all.

Haha, your stick figures are the best!

You actually did convince me I was adopted once. And you probably convinced Amber at one point too. It wouldn't surprise me ;-P LoL

Hmmmmm . . . who gave you such an amazing idea for a blog post?!

Chantel said...

Nice try Helena, but I know I'm not adopted :-P you can't convince me again!

Thanks for linking up!

Love! Thanks for the explanation. I've seen it Hell-ee-na before as well. I love 'your' pronunciation though.

Well I must have missed this one when you first wrote it. But I found this post off of Small Treasures Tueaday, which I found from your post talking about it, and the importance of leaving meaningful comments on all of them. So I figured I should be extra meaningful and say I wish I had an accent in my name and be as cool as you. :)
